Payson Flattery ND, DC, DAAPM
He specializes in Regenerative Orthopedics with an emphasis on chronic pain, complex musculoskeletal conditions, and metabolic contributors to delayed healing.
An Integrated Approach to Orthopedic Pain and Injury
Dr. Payson Flattery specializes in Orthopedic and Sports Medicine focusing exclusively on the treatment of orthopedic pain and injury by utilizing Regenerative Medicine.
Dr. Flattery has been a leader in the field of Regenerative Medicine for over 25 years. Given his varied background, his strength lies in his ability to accurately assess not only a patient’s pain generator but also the aberrant movement patterns that often lead to injury, pain, and dysfunction. With a hands-on approach Dr. Flattery will perform different orthopedic tests, palpate soft tissues, and move your joints through specific movement patterns to better understand the underlying dysfunction. A detailed Diagnostic Ultrasound Exam is then implemented to allow him to visually assess injured tissue (i.e. rotator cuff tears). This will help determine the complexity and type of Regenerative Medicine to be delivered.
This detailed approach determines the true cause of pain and the factors perpetuating it. Through this detailed medical history and a meticulous physical examination, Dr. Flattery renders a clear diagnosis and explains it directly to the patient, including the appropriate treatment options.
The primary goal of treatment remains constant: to resolve chronic or acute pain as efficiently and completely as possible.
Dr. Flattery began using Prolotherapy in 2001, after personally experiencing its ability to resolve recurrent pain. He later expanded into additional regenerative injection techniques, including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in 2005, and Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Therapy in 2011, developing a clinic dedicated to advanced orthopedic biologics.
He has over 17 years of Diagnostic and Image Guided Ultrasound experience. This window into the body allows one to actually see the integrity of the tissue, including damage—such as rotator cuff tears or ligament degeneration—and to guide injections with greater precision.
Dr. Flattery is a founding member and former faculty of the Naturopathic Academy of Therapeutic Injection (2003).
He is responsible for helping develop a specialty program in Naturopathic Orthopedic Medicine and teaches other physicians in the philosophy and technique of regenerative injection therapies. His work includes journal publications and authorship contributions.
He is featured as an expert in regenerative medicine in “The Cure for Chronic Pain” by Nancy S. Moore, PhD, RN, with a foreword by Ross Hauser, MD.
Dr. Flattery works with professional and Olympic athletes at national and international levels.
He graduated summa cum laude from Western States Chiropractic College, then completed his doctorate at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1999.
Early in his career he specialized in assessing and treating functional movement disorders and was certified in Active Release Technique and FAKTR- a system that utilizes many manual and instrument-assisted soft tissue techniques and incorporates functional rehabilitation through provocation and movement.
He has extensive training over 17 years in Musculoskeletal Diagnostic and Image Guided Ultrasound through Tom Clark, DC, RVT, RMSK and the University of Washington.
Dr. Flattery is board certified as a Functional Medicine Hyperbaric Clinician (FMHC) and by the American Academy of Pain Management.
He has special interests in white water kayaking, climbing, backcountry skiing, mountain biking, surfing, and backpacking.
